Cadaqués :: Catalunya Experience
Cadaqués is a lovely town in the Alt Empordà, only two hours away from Barcelona. Contrary to Barcelona, the town is not crowded with tourists but rather attracts people willing to buy a second home in a beautiful and authentic place.
Salvador Dalí used to visit Cadaqués very often when he was a child, and he loved it so much that he later bought a home in Port Lligat, a small village near the town. He is not the only artist who has been inspired by this town. Indeed, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró among others, also spent some time in Cadaqués.
There are many places worthy of interest in this town, here are some of them.
Dalí House-Museum
Salvador Dali’s house in Port Lligat was turned into a museum and opened to the public in 1997. It is representative of the painter’s unusual personality and was declared part of the Spanish historical heritage. Originally a fisherman shed, the artist modified it over the years. Inside, you can see items that belonged to him, his workshop, his book collection, and his rooms. In the garden, you can admire his big pool.
All art and Dalí lovers will be amazed when visiting his house.
Cap de Creus Natural Park
Cap de Creus Natural Park is an exceptional place where land and aquatic fauna and flora are protected on an area of 14 000 hectares. As interesting for the wildlife as for the landscapes, this park is a must-see for nature lovers. Sports and activities are organized, such as excursions on horseback, scuba diving, or paragliding among others. There are also exhibitions about nature, geology, or archeology.
Casa Serinyana
Beautiful modernist house in front of the beach, Casa Serinyana is also called Casa Blaua because of its blue tiles. The construction started in 1910, when inhabitants from Cadaqués became richer in America and Cuba and wanted spectacular homes when they came back in Spain. Many houses of this kind can be found on the coast.
If you are interested in architecture, you should not miss this wonderful house.
Santa Maria church
The construction of this wonderful church started during the XVIth on the higher part of the town, and is mainly of Gothic style. Inside, a spectacular baroque altarpiece of 23 meters high is dedicated to the Virgin of Hope. The Mass is celebrated every day, and whether you are a catholic or not, it is very impressive to assist to the ceremony.
